On my Design Wall….Swooning

This pattern – Swoon - has been in the To Do Pile for six months or more. After waiting nearly three months for the fabrics to arrive from o/s, they finally found the cutting mat and blocks 1 and 2 are complete.

While I was waiting so patiently (not!) for said fabrics, I hit the scrap bin and whipped up a block called ‘Goose In a Puddle’ from one of Bonnie Hunter’s books. This block is approx 14″ unfinished, so you can see the Swoon Blocks are monster sized at 24″.

Tripod Beanbag

During my photography classes, we need to use a tripod. They can be cumbersome to lug about and set up, especially outdoors. Our tutors use small beanbags which are easy to carry and can be plonked onto any sturdy surface, which allows your camera to rest still at all sorts of angles.

I have been waiting for the right project to use this cute fabric.

I filled a separate fabric pouch with dried beans and stitched it closed, so they won’t escape and the local wildlife won’t be able to feast on the contents too easily. You could use rice or polystyrene beads as well. For travelling you could just use the outer cover and fill it with something at your destination.

And here it is ready for action!

Elephant Parade 2011

The elephants have paraded around other cities over the past couple of years and now it is Singapore’s turn. 162 of the baby life-sized elephants were painted and decorated by various artists and local celebrities. An auction will be held, along with the sale of 1000′s of miniature versions, to raise money and awareness of the plight of the Asian elephants and their fragile habitats.

Singapore Quilters Challenge

The theme this year was “Strip Tease” – the challenge to produce a quilt using 2.5″ strips from a Jelly Roll or similar. My quilt is from the book Scrap Basket Sensations by Kim Brackett, called Over and Under. I used fabrics from both Parisville
by Tula Pink and Innocent Crush by Anna Maria Horner, with a couple of Pat Bravo Oval Elements thrown in. It was machnine quilted on my Bernina 440 (not very well!)

Quilt for a new arrival

The fabric stash has been raided to find plenty of pinks for the anticipated arrival of a new baby girl. Once again I followed the pattern from this book by Kim Brackett.

Photo not great, but we are in the midst of a monsoon weather pattern, so pics not great, inside or out. Still to be be quilted and finished asap.

Many Nationalities having fun

One group of friends has a weekly therapy session where we let off steam about the irritations of living in another culture. One of the benefits of an expat environment though, is living amongst so many different cultures. Our children are extremely fortunate (they will thank us one day!) to attend schools which celebrate this wonderful diversity. The annual United Nations night at our school is a wonderful celebration of the 75+ different nationalities of students who attend. The students wear national dress – the Aussie kids seem to favour green and gold rugby jumpers and Flag tattoos in the absence of a national costume. With minimal help from staff and parents, food stalls abound and then a fabulous dance production showcasing the many cultures.

On a glorious, balmy evening we sampled food from China, India, Singapore, USA, NZ, Sweden, Canada, Japan, Africa, Australia, Holland, Cambodia, Philippines, Germany, Thailand and more….it was amazing. To see the African students doing the graceful Vietnamese dance, Indian kids doing Rap and the Chinese ribbon dance, blonde caucasians bopping to wild Indian music and Asian kids doing the NZ Haka was a real thrill. Congratulations kids on a wonderful event.

I have been hanging out for these – 1. Great quilting book – it has a super spiral binding, so easy to use; 2. Free Spirit Colour chart – wow this arrived from half way around the world in only 6 days….am super impressed; and 3. the one magazine I cannot live without whilst living away from home
